Cancellieri Displays Glimpses of Brilliance in Bright Spot for Unstable Lazio

The mood at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had let in a total of 10 goals while scoring only two in their last five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were concluding their latest protest in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Coming Unstitched?

Had their campaign falling apart, or was there ever any cohesion holding it together to start with? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri as head coach this summer, before he admitted that the club had omitted to inform him about the transfer ban they were facing for fiscal problems. Reports that he might quit were without basis, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "swindled" him.

Lazio appeared equally disorganized in their performances as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing the remaining initial five matches, featuring the derby della Capitale. From one game to the next, it has been hard to tell if they're getting better or collapsing.

Cancellieri's Unexpected Return

A single player kept smiling throughout. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio this year. He was on the last one on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his parent club were advocating for him to stay there for another season. The registration embargo forced a rethink. The club couldn't risk to reduce their roster with no new signings.

He signed initially when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances with the club in 2022-23, the vast majority of those from the bench. The club's longtime sporting director, Igli Tare, who left after that campaign, later stated Sarri of "telling everyone Cancellieri would be a star only to bench him consistently."

Uncovering His Natural Fit

Perhaps the manager was continuing to attempt to determine the exact type of the player's talent. Billed as an attacking winger when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as an unconvincing alternative to Ciro Immobile at No 9. During 63 outings during spells with Empoli and Parma in the past two years, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
